The Cultural Compass

The Cultural Compass is a powerful tool for leaders and HR professionals to understand and their team and organizational culture.

Based on leading cultural and motivation theories, it provides actionable insights to enhance team and organizational culture and align team values with organizational goals.

The Cultural Compass consists of two sub-measurements:

1. Desired Culture:

This section provides a clear overview of what motivates your team members. It assesses the importance that each individual places on key motivators such as recognition, work-life balance, and clear goals.

2. Current Culture:

This section evaluates your team's current satisfaction levels with each identified motivator.

Comparing the importance of each motivator with the team's satisfaction shows any gaps that may exist. These gaps indicate areas where improvements can be made. We call this the Cultural Agenda.

How it Works

The Cultural Compass assessment is a quick, straightforward tool designed to help teams understand and improve their work culture.

Here’s how it works:

1. Initiator Sign-Up: The process begins with the initiator signing up by entering their first name, last name, and email address. The initiator also selects a submission deadline—the specific date by which all team members need to complete the assessment.

2. Custom Link Creation and Assessment Completion: After signing up and setting the deadline, the initiator completes both parts of the assessment, which involves rating the importance of 15 key motivators and their current satisfaction with each. The entire process is very simple and straightforward, taking no more than 5 to 6 minutes to complete. The system is self-explanatory and guides the initiator through each step. Once the assessment is completed, the system generates a customized link specifically for the initiator’s team.

3. Team Participation: The initiator shares the custom link with their team members, who then use it to access and complete their own assessments. Each team member rates the same 15 motivators in terms of importance and satisfaction, with their responses being anonymous.

4. Report Generation: After the submission deadline, the system compiles all responses and generates a detailed report. This report highlights what motivates the team, identifies any gaps between importance and satisfaction, and provides actionable insights for improving team culture.

5. Report Delivery: The generated report is sent directly to the initiator, who can then use the insights to foster a more motivating and satisfying work environment together with the team.

The Theoretical Foundations
of the Cultural Compass

The Cultural Compass measures company culture based on 15 motivators we selected based on leading research from experts in the field. Together, they represent the most common values and drivers of motivation in the workplace and provide a comprehensive view of what typically motivates employees.

In particular, the Cultural Compass draws from the research and theories of several leading experts in the fields of culture and motivation such as:

Geert Hofstede: Cultural dimensions theory, which identifies key cultural factors that influence workplace behavior and motivation.

Edgar Schein: Organizational culture, emphasizing the importance of understanding the underlying assumptions and values that shape organizational behavior and motivation.

Richard Ryan and Edward Deci: Self-Determination Theory (SDT), highlighting the importance of autonomy, competence, and relatedness in fostering intrinsic motivation.

Amy Edmondson: The Fearless Organization, emphasizing the importance of a high-trust culture where employees feel safe to take risks and express themselves.

Daniel Pink: Drive, which underscores autonomy, purpose, and mastery as key drivers of motivation in the modern workplace.

By drawing from these influential theories, the Cultural Compass offers a robust tool for assessing and improving team culture, helping leaders foster an environment that supports both high performance and employee satisfaction.
